What is active recall?
Active recall — also called retrieval practice or the testing effect — means deliberately pulling information out of your memory instead of putting it back in. Closing the book and trying to answer a question is active recall. Re-reading the chapter is not.
It feels harder than rereading, and that’s exactly the point: the effort of retrieving is what strengthens the memory.
Why it beats rereading
In the classic studies on the testing effect (Roediger & Karpicke, 2006, and many since), students who tested themselves remembered far more on a delayed exam than students who simply restudied the same material — even though rereading felt more productive at the time.
That gap is the trap. Rereading and highlighting create a “fluency illusion”: the text feels familiar, so you think you know it. Active recall removes the illusion — you find out immediately what you can and can’t produce from memory, which is the thing the exam actually tests.
How to practise active recall
Turn material into questions and answer them from memory, closed-book. Practical ways: flashcards (question on one side, answer on the other), past papers and practice questions, the “blurting” method (write everything you remember on a blank page, then check), or explaining the topic out loud as if teaching it (the Feynman technique).
The rule of thumb: if you’re looking at the answer, you’re studying passively. If you’re struggling to produce it before you check, you’re doing it right. A few minutes of recall is worth far more than an hour of rereading.
Pair it with spaced repetition
Active recall tells you what you know now; spaced repetition decides when to test it again. Reviewing just before you’re about to forget — at expanding intervals — locks material into long-term memory with the least total effort. Tools like Anki automate this with algorithms such as FSRS.
